Beauty Tips for the Holiday Season

Sunday, December 17, 2017
The holidays mean a visit from Santa, warm fires, and kisses under the mistletoe, but it can also mean stress, long nights, and eating and drinking things that don’t make us feel our best. With all those holiday parties on our calendars, we want to look as good as we can. Of course, there’s the adage that “we are what we eat,” which doesn’t exactly bode well for us this season. There are things you can do to keep your skin glowing and your body from gaining the obligatory holiday ten pounds, and we can help. Read on for beauty tips for the holiday season.

Take Care of Your Skin
Our skin plays a huge part in how we look and feel, but it can suffer from the poor eating, drinking, and lack of sleep this time of year. On top of this, the dry weather can make it dry and cracked. Want to know how to get soft skin? Use the right products and hydrate, hydrate, and hydrate some more … and we’re not talking about eggnog either! Make sure you get in a half ounce to an ounce of water for every pound you weigh each day. You won’t believe how much energy this will give you on top of keeping your skin dewy and glowing.

Another thing to watch out for during this time of year is our tendency to flop onto our beds from exhaustion, not having washed our faces and removed our makeup. This isn’t going to make or break your skin if you do this every now and then, but keep makeup remover wipes by the sink so that you can at least use those before you crash.

Never Underestimate the Power of Zzzzzs
Shoot for the goal of eight hours a night, even if it means you must skip that after-dinner drink. Sleep is so important for our skin, our health (mental and physical), and weight control. It’s okay to get less than that here and there but if you’re getting a poor amount of sleep on a consistent basis, you’ll have bags under your eyes, will likely be too tired to exercise, and will be more apt to eating things you normally wouldn’t. In short, getting the right amount of sleep will help you make better decisions, which will be crucial when it comes to choose what you want from the buffet line. Check out the Calm app and lull yourself into a restful, deep sleep.

Eat Well and Exercise
We know, we know—these can seem like impossible feats around the holidays, but it is possible to eat well and exercise. “All things in moderation” should be your motto so, if you go for that decadent, creamy cocktail, skip the dessert. Or skip the booze and hit the sweets. And when you’re heading to the food table, remember to load up on veggies first so you’re too full to enjoy the heavy helping of chips ‘n’ guacamole you gave yourself.

As for exercise, the biggest mistake people make during the holidays is to think that only an hour workout will do. They think if they can’t get that hour at their local gym in, it’s not worth going at all. What fitness experts now know is that we can get in just as intense a workout in 20-30 minutes these days, especially if you’re doing high intensity interval training. Pressed snooze on your alarm before work one too many times? Consider going on a walk during your lunch break. Every step counts, which we know now more than ever with our Fitbits.

Get Glam with Your Makeup
The holidays are for glamour, and that means being a bit more dramatic with your makeup. If you’re a bit too conservative to use glitter daily, think about it incorporating it into your makeup routine for that cocktail party you have coming up on the weekend. Whether it’s a glittery highlighter, glittery nail polish, or that super sparkly gold eyeshadow you’ve been eyeing, these fun touches will give your makeup routine a fun holiday boost. And don’t be afraid to try a smoky eye!

The holidays really can be the most wonderful time of the year but, without taking a bit of extra care, they can wreak havoc on our beauty routine. Follow these tips and you’ll have a great time while still having that gorgeous glow.
